How does the Field work?
The Field forms wherever enough people hold together through discipline, belief, story, and shared purpose. It appears as resistant air, low-hanging smoke, flattened sound, and tremors through stone with no mechanical source.
Witches do not create the Field. They shape how it moves through a formation: compressing it to hold a line, releasing it before pressure breaks the people carrying it, and redistributing strain so no single point bears too much.
Four governing principles
- Compression
- The concentration of collective belief around a formation, city, or population, making the Field denser and more rigid.
- Release
- The controlled dispersal of accumulated pressure before it exceeds what the people inside the Field can sustain.
- Redistribution
- The movement of strain across a formation so no soldier, unit, or fortress carries the entire load alone.
- Rupture
- A sudden system-wide failure caused by compression continuing without a viable path for release.
The physics behind the fiction
The closest real-world model is a power grid. When one node fails, its load does not vanish; it moves to the remaining nodes. If enough fail in sequence, a distributed system becomes a cascade. In the novels, each fortress carries part of the frontier's pressure. Sequential failure turns distribution into concentration.
The second model is criticality: systems that appear stable until a threshold is crossed. The third is structural failure, where a load path or connection fails at a scale it was never designed to survive. The Field makes those invisible pressures physically visible.
